ATTENTION: MARCH 22nd IS WORLD WATER DAY!

Using water more efficiently reduces greenhouse gases, protects our health and – saves money! The team at Karma Royal Bali are all fired up to make the most of this day. Just some of the initiatives they are implementing on this important day include:

*Checking all our facilities and pipes for leaks that contribute to water waste
*They will only use their dishwasher for complete loads
*They won’t be changing any of the sheets unless on special request
*They won’t be watering the gardens for World Water Day (let’s hope it rains)
*They won’t be washing any of the Karma cars today

They are also providing easy suggestions for members to preserve our most precious resource such as:
*Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving
*Take shorter showers
*Keep your towels for an extra day
*Be mindful when refilling your water bottles that no water goes wasted

KARMA KANDARA AND KARMA JIMBARAN SAVE NEARLY A QUARTER OF A MILLION PLASTIC BOTTLES A YEAR FROM ENDING UP IN LANDFILL

Following on from our last edition where we reported Karma Kandara alone will save 150,000 plastic bottles from ending up in landfill (and the ocean), we’re excited to confirm that with the new water dispensers installed at our Karma Jimbaran resort, we’re potentially saving nearly a quarter of a million plastic bottles a year from ending up in landfill – this is epic!

Karma Developments moves into responsible and sustainable design…

These include planning to design, construction, renovation, operation and maintenance.

In this issue, Karma Developments introduces solutions for Air Conditioners, by far one of the most electricity-hungry appliances on the planet that contribute to greenhouse gases and are thought to be a hazard on our personal wellbeing. As the planet heats up, we’re using air conditioners more and more. Below are suggestions from Karma Developments on what’s possible for the current Block 1 Apartment Project at Karma Kandara….

1. Material and equipment
Our material of choice is a Daikin VRV that is a multi-split type air conditioner system. It’s the best equipment available at this time and great value for money! These are excellent for residence buildings that use variable refrigerant flow control to provide customers with the ability to maintain individual zone control in each room and floor of the residence. The Coefficient Of Performance (COP) is 4.2. This means that for 1 kw of electricity consumes, the return in cold will be 4.2 kw.

2.2. Double glazing Windows
Our large sliding door in the façade are equipped with a double glazing 4/12/6 which is a far better insulation and helps to avoid loss of energy.

2.3 Micro switch
All window frames are fitted with a micro switch connected to a timer. For example, if the balcony door is left open the A/C will stop after 20 seconds. When the doors are closed, the AC will then be switched back ON after one minute. All of these energy reduction measures were made possible due to the savings made on other aspects of our finishing’s and structure value engineering.

5 WAYS TO REDUCE ELECTRICITY BILLS TODAY!
1. Make sure the air conditioners in un-occupied rooms are villas are OFF.
2. Clean air filters regularly as built-up debris restricts air flow leading to higher electricity bills.
3. Replace falling parts immediately as these can increase in higher electricity bills.
4. Check your units have been installed properly to prevent frustrating breakdowns.
5. Become a fan of ceiling fans!

HOW TO CREATE ZERO WASTE CELEBRATIONS

We can learn a lot from the Balinese. In many of their Hindu ceremonies, decorations for homes and temples are made from nature. During Galungan and Kuningan, for example, the Penjors (bamboo poles) are adorned with palm leaves, fern leaves, coconuts, bananas and cucumbers, sugar cane, white cloth, and Chinese coins – zero impact on landfill. The Balinese morning offerings ‘Canang Sari’ are a bamboo tray filled with colorful flowers and young coconut leaves. Let’s get creative and explore how we can use natural materials for decorations for future celebrations – your staff, members and your guests will love!

STAFF SUGGESTION: Agnes Schouten reminds us of ‘old Bali’ where banana leaves were used for food wrappings and indeed many luxury resorts are using banana leaves for just this – looks exquisite!

NEW! SUSTAINABLE MENU NOW AT KARMA SANCTUM SOHO AND SANCTUM ON THE GREEN

Singer Chrissie Hynde collaborates with Karma for a sustainable menu.

A star collaboration at Karma Sanctum Soho with singer Chrissie Hynde and three-time UK Michelin star chef, Gary Hollihead, has resulted in a mostly vegan menu with a glam rock and roll twist!

Explains Mark Fuller, the hotel’s owner: “Garry Hollihead and I had been looking at the vegeteranian offering at sanctum for a while and Chrissie came up with all the answers! It’s the way forward for both the environment, health and sustainability and we are the first hotel to offer this in the UK. In our opinion, why shouldn’t vegetarians and plant based food lovers have a fun place too!.”

Chrissie is passionately involved with Ahimsamilk.org, a not-for-profit company which campaigns for and promotes the concept of slaughter-free milk whereby no cows, calves and bulls are ever harmed. Read more about Ahimsamilk.org…Read More
