KARMA’S SUSTAINABLE VISION 2020

KARMA’S SUSTAINABLE VISION 2020

DID YOU KNOW: the top 5 environmental concerns are Biodiversity, Water, Deforestation, Pollution and Climate Change.

Below is a round-up of what’s happening sustainably at Karma Group this month.

ROTTNEST ROUND-UP

Karma Rottnest has partnered with It’s Not Plastic (www.itsnotplastic.co) Australia’s first 100% plant based bottled water! The entire bottle is biodegradable and compostable – with labels printed directly on the bottle using vegetable dyes and caps made from sugar cane – now that’s creative! It’s Not Plastic is currently stocked by WA brands including Captain Cook Cruises, Quay Hotel, Freemantle Arts Center and others – and Karma Rottnest!

CONSCIOUS BEAUTY

Water is a limited resource (especially in Australia right now) and many beauty brands are meeting the challenge. At Karma Spa on Rottnest Island, we partnered with Perth-based skincare brand, MOKOSH because of their waterless formulations. That and their undeniable commitment to social and community projects. Last year, they began raising funds to purchase trees to plant in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor to provide habitat for endangered species – now that’s true beauty!

INDIA CALLING

As of January 1, the Kerala government banned all single-use plastic products – which means no more plastic carry bags, plastic plates and cups, styrofoam and other plastic items – yay!
Here’s a brief update of what our Indian teams have implemented at our resorts.
OUT with plastic straws IN with bamboo straws.
*Additional water dispensers places around the resorts.
*Serve filtered water (with lemon and herbs) from glass jars in all F&B outlets.
*Have a composting system in the kitchen to deal with kitchen waste.
*They have a clause in all construction contracts about the disposal of construction rubbish, whereby we ensure the contractors know not to put the rubbish on the beach.
*Beach clean-ups once a month – fab!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As well as coming up with ideas to remove single-use plastic to cover food for in-villa dining at some resorts, let’s keep an eye out on what packaging our suppliers are delivering food and goods in – am sure there are many creative alternatives for single-use plastic packaging in this area of our businesses as well.

STAFF FEEDBACK

It was great to receive feedback from the team in Vietnam regrading a supplier there who makes 100% biodegradable food packaging including bowls, plates, bamboo straws, and containers – more on this to come!

WHAT OTHER BRANDS ARE UP TO

This year Wynn Resorts became the first integrated resort in the world to use at significant scale an on-site NORDAQ water bottling plant and the first in Macau to introduce Winnow Vision, AI-powered food waste management system to tackle food waste. These two initiatives will cut plastic bottle usage by over 8 million bottles and help reduce food waste by 35%!
